Music Perceptual Similarity (MPS)
Music has features that make it distinctive to listeners. It is
very hard to pinpoint the features mathematically and even more
difficult to create an algorithm that could compare two pieces and
decide if they are similar or not. The Music Perceptual Similarity
technology can do that. It can extract distinctive features from a
recorded sample. A database can be assembled and searched for similar
music.
This technology is under active development. Preview will be made
available for download as soon as it is ready.
Potential applications
The MPS technology can be useful to music stores in offering items
similar to the items already ordered by the customer. This service may
appeal to general music buyers who would normally lack education or
skills to select music based on an artist's name, song title etc. It's
often noted that shoppers can be overwhelmed by too broad selection
and choose items to buy from a very narrow subset that they are
familiar with. MPS can be used to bring other records to their
attention, the records that they are likely to enjoy because their music
style is similar to what the buyers are known to like.
MPS can be used in mp3 music players to automatically generate
playlists based on users' preferences.
